PickleUp Ambassador Alex Welch Finishes 19th at the Arc of Attrition 50 Mile Ultra

We’re beyond proud to share a phenomenal performance from one of our own — PickleUp athlete and ambassador Alex Welch — who battled the brutal winter trails of Cornwall to claim 19th place in the Arc of Attrition 50-mile (80.5 km) ultramarathon!

The Arc of Attrition by UTMB isn’t just any trail race — this legendary January event harnesses the raw power of the UK’s South West Coast Path, making for an unforgettable yet punishing winter ultra challenge. Starting at the iconic Minack Theatre in Porthcurno and finishing over 50 miles later in Porthtowan, the course features relentless coastal terrain, unpredictable winter weather, and long stretches between aid stations that test even the toughest runners.

Why This Result Matters

Finishing 19th overall in such a deep and competitive field — with hundreds of athletes toeing the line — is a testament to Alex’s endurance, grit, and strategic race execution. The Arc 50 attracts a mix of elite and seasoned trail runners, and the weather and terrain alone are enough to humble even experienced ultramarathoners.

This result isn’t just a number — it reflects:

  • Mental resilience: The Arc is known for sections of remote coastline where runners must stay strong physically and mentally.

  • Tactical fuel and pacing: With aid stations spaced strategically along the route, pacing and nutrition strategy are key to maintaining performance deep into the race.

  • Preparation and grit: A 50-mile winter ultra is as much about training your mind as your body — and Alex delivered on both fronts.

PickleUp in Action

Ultramarathons like the Arc of Attrition demand unwavering energy, stamina, and electrolytes — especially when the weather turns cold and conditions are unpredictable. That’s where PickleUp comes in: engineered to help athletes push through cramps and sustain performance when every mile matters.

Whether it’s soggy trails or steep coastal paths, Alex showed what smart fuelling and strong willpower can achieve — and we couldn’t be prouder to support him on this incredible journey.

Huge congratulations, Alex — we’re already looking forward to seeing what you conquer next!
